Now that the air is beginning to cool and the leaves are changing colors, fall is here and winter is well on the way. There is quite a bit to do in preparation for winter, and one thing you need to remember to do is to prepare your water garden for the winter season. There are a variety of things that you can do to get your water garden all ready for winter, including adding water garden heaters to keep the garden from freezing.
Tip #1 – Use Water Garden Heaters to Prevent Freezing – Of course one of the most important things you need to do to get your water garden ready for winter is to add water garden heaters. You don’t want your pond to ice over completely, and a heater is a great way to accomplish this. Heaters are usually fairly inexpensive and they keep the water just warm enough to keep it from totally freezing and causing problems. It is especially important that you keep the pond from totally icing over if you have fish.
Tip #2 – Bring in Tropical Plants – Another thing you’ll need to do to get your water garden prepared for the winter is to make sure that you bring in your tropical plants. Some tropical water garden plants are on the expensive side, and the last thing you want to happen is for them to freeze and die. So, be sure that you bring them in before the first freeze to preserve them. Also, if you have any fish that you don’t think will be able to withstand the cold, you may want to remove them from the water garden as well.
Tip #3 – Clean Out the Pond – It is important that you give the pond a good cleaning before winter as well. Make sure that you get all the debris out of the pond, such as dead leaves. Take the time to use a water garden vacuum to vacuum the pond out as well. This way the pond will be all cleaned and ready to go when spring comes.
Tip #4 – Don’t Feed Your Fish as Much – You will also want to avoid feeding your fish as much now that winter is on the way. After the water temperature falls and stays below 54 degrees, the fish don’t eat, so you won’t need to feed them.
Tip #5 – Remove the Filters and Pumps – Once the fish are no longer eating, then you can remove all the filters and pumps from the pond. You won’t need to worry about the filter, since the fish will not be excreting into the water if they are not fed. If you have any pumps that you are still going to use, be sure that you check them regularly to get rid of ice and make sure that they never freeze, or they will be ruined.
