Not only will they provide your home’s landscape with an aesthetic value, but they also can attract wildlife to your backyard as well. However, when you are ready to create a water garden in your back yard, there are several things you will need to keep in mind. The following are a four questions that you’ll want to ask yourself when you are planning a water garden.

Question #1 – Do I Want Fish? – One of the first questions you’ll need to ask yourself when you are planning backyard water gardens is whether or not you really want to have some fish. Many people decide that they want to have beautiful fish in the water gardens, such as Koi or goldfish. However, if you do want to have fish, you’ll have to make sure that the water is prepared. If the fish are going to survive, the water will have to have a ph of between 6.5 and 8.4. You must also be sure that the pond is deep enough so that the pond won’t freeze during the winter if you want to have fish in the pond all year long.

Question#2 – Where Should You Place the Water Garden? – You will also want to ask yourself where you want to place the backyard water gardens. Make sure that you avoid places that are beside trees that shed leaves, since you won’t want to constantly worry about cleaning the leaves out of your water garden. Usually a nice sunny place is best for your water garden; however, if you do want fish, you should have a bit of shade.

Question#3 – What Size Do You Want? – It is also important that you ask yourself what size of a water garden you want. If you decide that you want fish in your backyard water gardens, then you will need to be sure that the water garden you build is big enough to house those fish. Also decide whether it will be small enough for you to easily maintain. The last thing you want to do is to build a water garden that is too large for you to keep up with. So, figure out a reasonable size before you build the water garden.

Question #4 – What Plants Should I Choose? – Also ask yourself what kinds of plants you want in your backyard water gardens. There are a variety of different plants that do great in water gardens, but you’ll need to decide which ones will be great in your garden.
